History

The first U.S. consular official in Western Australia was posted to Fremantle in 1886, with the first Consul General appointed to the State’s capital of Perth in 1937.

Western Australia is Australia’s biggest state and occupies the entire western third of the country, with a population of approximately 2.6 million. The consular district of WA has around 15,000 U.S. citizens at any one time.

Consular Operations

Consular services offered in Perth include assistance to American citizens, issuance of passports and determinations of U.S. citizenship, and visa services to Australians and other foreign nationals. Consular Services are provided by appointment only. For general inquiries:

    • Email: PerthACS@state.gov . Email inquiries are answered by the ACS Unit at the Consulate throughout the business day; however more complex inquiries are generally responded to within 1-2 business days.
    • Emails sent over the weekend or on Australian and U.S. public holidays will be responded to on the next business day.

Emergency Services and Assistance

In the event of an emergency involving an American citizen that requires urgent consular assistance please call the U.S. Consulate General Perth at (08) 6144-5100 – 8:00am to 4:30pm Perth time on business days. After business hours, dial (08) 9476-0081.

When calling from the United States, dial 011-618-6144-5100 during business hours or 011-618-9476-0081 for after-hours assistance.

Emergencies include the death, arrest or serious injury/illness of an American citizen and victims of serious crime.  Emergencies do not include inquiries about U.S. visas (including green cards and naturalization), or routine passport, citizenship, notary, taxation or federal benefits questions.

U.S. Commercial Service

The U.S. Commercial Service, within the International Trade Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce, helps American companies to find qualified, local partners, to overcome trade barriers, and to gain exposure in the Australian market with the overarching goal of increasing U.S. exports abroad.  For more information, please email Commercial Specialist Donna Carter at donna.carter@trade.gov
