A Perth high school has welcomed United States Navy submariners for a morning of sport, STEM and leadership activities.

Students from Comet Bay College in Secret Harbour hosted 20 crew members on Monday from visiting U.S. submarine USS North Carolina.

The submariners toured the school’s Design and Technology department, including its STEM Academy and Drones program, where students showcased their work and sailors spoke about naval technology, engineering and teamwork.

Students also engaged the American visitors in a friendly game of basketball and held a workshop on Australian Rules football.

Consul General Siriana Nair said the U.S. Navy has a longstanding commitment to volunteering in local communities.

“I’m so proud to see our American sailors connect with the bright young minds and athletes at Comet Bay College.”

“Our U.S.-Australia alliance offers so many opportunities, including in STEM, defense and athletic pursuits, and also allows for building lasting friendships.”

Comet Bay College Acting Principal Mick Churchman said it was an honor to host the U.S. submariners and showcase the broad range of facilities and programs on offer to its students.

“I know many of our Defence students and those aspiring for a military career were enthusiastic about engaging with the sailors to learn about life on the seas,” he said. “It’s fantastic that the sailors took the time to share their experiences with our staff and students today and, in turn, learn more about our great relationship with the Australian Defence Force.

“The basketball match was a highlight for many, and I hope our new American friends return home safely with a greater appreciation of the skills needed to excel in Australian Football!”

Chief Information System Technician (Submarine) Adam Ebaben said it was a rewarding and fun-filled morning.

“It took me back to my days of being a kid in school, especially with the basketball game, and it was exciting to see what the students were working on.”

“The U.S Navy also really appreciates the importance of STEM, as we know today’s students are the sailors, scientists and engineers of tomorrow.”

Comet Bay College is a public co-educational high school established in 2006.

The USS North Carolina docked in Perth at HMAS Stirling Naval Base for a scheduled port visit as part of routine patrols in the Indo-Pacific region.
