Please follow the instructions outlined below when preparing to apply for a U.S. passport in Australia.
Do not follow the instructions pre-printed on the passport forms. As these are designed for applicants within the United States, information such as accepted forms of payment and where to submit the application are not applicable. The forms incorrectly state that Passport Services will not mail a passport to a private address outside the United States. Applicants may write an Australian mailing address on the forms (write over the boxes where there is insufficient space), and are required to provide an Express Post envelope for the return of their new passports. Passports submitted to support an application for a new passport will be canceled and returned with the applicant’s new passport.
Please refer to our information regarding:
Know the passport form you require, and would like to download a .pdf version to fill out? You can find all forms at Travel.State.gov
You must provide one photo with your passport application. All our photo policies apply to both adults and children under age 16. We have a few exceptions to our photo policies for infants.
If you are traveling within 15 business days, you may need to apply for an emergency passport.
Applicants are required to provide an Express Post or Registered Post envelope for the return of their new and old passports. Applicants frequently supply the incorrect return postage, which delays the processing of their applications.
Applicants for a U.S. passport are required to provide their Social Security number.
The Consulates are closed on U.S. and Australian Public Holidays.
You will not be allowed entry to the consulate with battery-operated or electronic devices, and the consulates cannot store electronic devices. Persons arriving with these devices will be refused entry. Please make arrangements to leave electronic devices at home or store them off-site before arriving for your appointment.
