Change in Services at the U.S. Consulate Sydney

The U.S. Consulate in Sydney is in the process of moving to a new location. Unfortunately COVID-19 restrictions have delayed this long-planned move and the new consulate is not yet ready to open to the public.  We are only able to provide limited emergency services to U.S. citizens in Sydney at this time.

We are working to increase services for U.S.  citizens and visa applicants at the U.S. Consulate Melbourne to address the reduction in services in Sydney. We are also working with visa applicants to provide other options for their applications, including waiving the requirement for personal interviews in certain visa categories. We are working to resume normal operations at the U.S. Consulate in Sydney as soon as possible. If you intend to travel interstate in Australia, please make sure to check the guidelines of the states you are travelling to and from for the latest advice around permits and quarantine requirements due to COVID-19.

Visa Services

The U.S. Consulate in Sydney has paused all routine and emergency visa services while we move to a new location.  We will resume public services as soon as possible.  In the meanwhile, certain visa applicants may not need a visa interview and some applicants may be able to transfer their application to another U.S. consulate. We are working to increase services for U.S.  citizens and visa applicants at the U.S. Consulate Melbourne to address the reduction in services in Sydney.

Immigrant visa applicants (including K fiancé visa applicants) and Lawful Permanent Residents should refer to updates on the Embassy website.

Diversity Visa 2023 applicants may register online by November 9, 2021 for the 2023 Diversity Visa Lottery.

Nonimmigrant visa applicants

Australia is a member country of the Visa Waiver Program.  Applicants may be able to travel to the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa.

Applicants who have held previous nonimmigrant visas may not need an in-person interview.  Applicants should check if they qualify for a personal interview waiver through our Apply by Mail service.

Student visa applicants (F, M, J) do not need an in-person interview through December 31, 2021, and should apply through our Apply by Mail service.

U.S. Consulates General Melbourne and Perth are currently providing limited nonimmigrant visa services for visa applicants.  Please note the U.S. Mission to Australia cannot intervene on decisions regarding internal Australian border and travel restrictions made by the Australian state and territorial governments.

Applicants seeking U.S. visa assistance should refer to our website information here for updates to our services.  The U.S. Consulate in Sydney will resume normal visa services as soon as possible.

American Citizen Services

For all U.S. citizen emergencies (including deaths, arrests, hospitalizations, and destitution of a U.S. citizen in the ACT, NSW or QLD), please contact us directly at SydneyACS@state.gov.

U.S. passport applicants who qualify to renew their passport by mail should send applications to U.S. Consulate General Perth (click here for instructions).  Processing times may be longer than usual; please be patient and apply early if you have upcoming travel plans.

U.S. passport applicants required to submit their application in person because they are not eligible to renew by mail should apply at either U.S. Consulate General Melbourne or Perth (click here for instructions).  Please note the U.S. Mission to Australia cannot intervene on decisions regarding internal Australian border and travel restrictions made by the Australian state and territorial governments.

Eligible U.S. citizens with recently expired U.S. passports may use those expired U.S. passports to travel directly to the United States until December 31, 2021.  Please click here for more information.

Social Security and federal benefits services are not available at this time.  Individuals in need of services relating to Social Security Administration (SSA) benefits should contact the SSA office in Manila, and individuals intending to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) must contact the U.S. Consulate General in Melbourne or Perth.  U.S. citizens planning to travel to the United States can also receive SSA services during their visit.

Renunciation interviews are not available at this time.  U.S. citizens who are not already on our renunciation appointment waitlist can apply to do so by following the guidance here, or can seek an appointment at U.S. Consulate General Perth or Melbourne.

Notary services are not available at this time.  If you are in need of a notary service, please consider if notarization by an Australian Notary Public and authentication by apostille from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is an acceptable alternative.  Click here for more information about this process.  Many U.S. states permit the use of remote notarial service providers. We recommend that you refer to your specific State Notary Handbook (generally available online) for more information to see if this option is suitable for your specific circumstance.
